- Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal (Endodontic Treatment)
Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and find problems early). Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also cause the nerve to be harmed to the point it requires root canal therapy. When this happens, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and start to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).
By the time the pulp is infected it must be treated, and can not heal on its own. It can even deteriorate the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and may be really painful. Symptoms that the pulp has actually ended up being infected might include sensitivity to hot/cold or sugary foods, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Often, however, no symptoms appear and the individual is unaware of any issue up until a checkup.
A root canal is then carried out to clear out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. When the infection is fixed, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any more infection. Typically a core build-up and crown is recommended for bring back a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
