Today's Topic Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are multiple methods to bleach teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use numerous approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and practical bleaching process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so simple and fast!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays ought to be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
