Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many clients, there are a number of ways to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth significantly. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize a number of approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
