Today's Topic Is:

Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. Because gum disease is generally pain-free, you may not know you have it. Also called periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of germs that is continuously forming on our teeth.

Some warning signs that may signal an issue:

  • gums that bleed easily.

  • red, inflamed, sore gums.

  • gums that have pulled away from the teeth.

  • persistent bad breath or bad taste.

  • permanent teeth that are separating or loose.

  • any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

  • any change in the fit of partial dentures.

There are lots of aspects that increase the risk of establishing gum disease including smoking cigarettes, pregnancy, and diabetes. It is important to go to your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better.

The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may end up being red, inflamed and bleed quickly. At this stage, the disease is still fixable and can normally be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily flossing and brushing.

Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can result in the loss of bone and tissue that support the teeth and it may become more serious over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and begin moving around in your mouth. It usually worsens slowly, however there can be periods of fast progression.

Aggressive periodontitis is a highly damaging form of periodontal disease that occurs in patients who are otherwise healthy. Common features include rapid loss of bone and tissue and might happen in some areas of the mouth, or in the entire mouth.

Research between systemic diseases and gum diseases is ongoing. While a link is not conclusive, some research studies suggest that serious gum disease might be related to a number of other health conditions such as stroke or diabetes.

Regular dental examinations and periodontal examinations are very important. The treatment techniques that most dentists diagnose will rely on the kind of disease and how far the condition has actually progressed. Good dental care at home is essential to help keep periodontal disease from ending up being more severe or recurring.
