Today Were Talking About:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of most patients, there are multiple ways to bleach teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize a number of approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and practical whitening process. The appointment is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment since it is so easy and fast!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
