Today's Subject Will Be:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are multiple methods to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use multiple methods: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. Three different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and practical lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment since it is so easy and quick!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
