Today's Discussion Will Be About:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous methods to bleach teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really quick and convenient whitening procedure. The appointment is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so easy and quick!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
