Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use numerous techniques: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient bleaching process. The appointment is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and quick!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
