What Is A Dental Crown?

A crown is a cap made to cover a tooth with the function of restoring it to its natural size and shape or to enhance its look. To get ready for the crown, dentists drill to remove the decayed area as well as form the tooth to get ready for the crown for that part which lies around and above the gum line.

The Discussion For Today Is:

Bridges (Dental)

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace missing teeth.

There are a number of kinds of bridges. We will go over the best options for your certain case. The "traditional bridge" is the most popular type and is normally made of porcelain fused to metal. These fixed bridges are most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. This type of bridge includes two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are connected on either side of the artificial teeth (pontics), filling the gap developed by one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last multiple years with appropriate home care; however, they might need to be replaced or re-cemented due to regular wear.

Reasons For Considering A Fixed Bridge:

  • Restore chewing and speaking ability.

  • Maintain facial shape.

  • Fill area of missing teeth.

  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.

  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance.

  • Restore your smile.

What does getting a Fixed Bridge include?

Getting a bridge generally requires two or more visits. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by eliminating a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression (mold) is made which will be sent out to a dental lab where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a short-term bridge will be made and used for a number of weeks until your next visit.

At the 2nd visit, your permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to accomplish a proper fit and comfy bite.

You will receive care directions at the conclusion of your treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will help in the life of your brand-new permanent bridge.

Why You Should Consider Dental Bridges?

This is an option for filling the space developed by a missing tooth. It is formed to appear like the missing tooth, and it takes its place in the mouth. The sides of a bridge uses the two surrounding teeth for support, hence the name. A bridge replaces the missing tooth, both functionally and cosmetically. Bridge work is as much an art as it is an exact science. The materials used may be gold alloys, porcelain bonded to metal alloy, or all ceramic material. The choice of material depends upon requirements for strength, wear, and/or esthetics.

It is essential that a missing tooth be replaced as soon as possible for a number of reasons. If not treated the teeth surrounding the gap begin to shift inward, producing a whole chain reaction of bad things. Teeth use their neighbors for support, and, with one missing, they start to "fall." As this gets worse the bite changes in reaction to the pressure. This can ultimately result in problems with the entire jaw, e.g. TMJ. The surrounding teeth degrade and it is simply a matter of time before they, too, are lost. Gum disease becomes a major problem, with the difficulty of treatment increasing as the neglect continues.
