Today Were Going Over:

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is essential when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and detect problems early). Often deep restorations or trauma to a tooth might also cause the nerve to be harmed to the point it needs root canal therapy. When this takes place, the pulp becomes infected, and can even extend through the root tip and start to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it needs to be treated, and can not heal by itself. It can even weaken the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and may be extremely unpleasant. Signs that the pulp has actually become infected might consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sugary foods, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no signs appear and the person is unaware of any problem till a checkup.

A root canal is then carried out to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. When the infection is fixed, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any additional infection. Normally a core build-up and crown is recommended for restoring a tooth that has actually had root canal therapy.
