Today's Topic Will Be:

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is essential when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and detect problems early). Often deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also trigger the nerve to be damaged to the point it needs root canal therapy. When this takes place, the pulp becomes infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it needs to be treated, and can not heal by itself. It can even damage the whole immune system. This is dangerous, and might be really uncomfortable. Symptoms that the pulp has become infected might include sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, discomfort to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. In some cases, however, no symptoms are apparent and the individual is unaware of any issue till a checkup.

A root canal is then performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. As soon as the infection is dealt with, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. Usually a core build-up and crown is suggested for bring back a tooth that has actually had root canal therapy.
