Today's Subject Will Be:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its original sizes and shape. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if recovered by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a big cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Remember that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth are subjected to incredible pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. A broken or split tooth is a far more serious matter and a lot more challenging to treat. Crowns prevent this, in addition to making for a nice smile.

It takes two appointments to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the first visit any decay is removed from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is worn during this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment generally requires two appointments. Your first visit will include taking impressions that will be used to produce your custom crown. A mold will also be used to develop a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for roughly 2 weeks up until your brand-new crown is fabricated by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. When these details are accomplished, your short-term crown will be put with temporary cement and your bite will be examined to guarantee you are biting appropriately.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly placed to guarantee the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental visits to examine your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
