Crowns are synthetic caps, typically made from a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and look following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has ended up being so advanced that big portions of the tooth needs to be taken out, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a split tooth from worsening, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be brought back to its natural appearance.

Treatments

A tooth must usually be decreased in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a special lab, which makes a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a temporary crown is used until the long-term crown is ready. Long-term crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are in some cases confused with veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are typically applied only to relatively little locations.

Caring For Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown might last approximately eight years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Particular habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly reduce the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, and even damage the crown.

Today's Conversation Will Be About:

Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning

We use ultrasonic scalers for many adult dental cleanings. These devices use ultrasonic vibrations to help breakdown the plaque and calculus on the teeth that trigger gingivitis and gum disease. The ultrasonic cleaners create microscopic bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, killing microorganisms and removing plaque and tartar at the same time. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the gum pockets to help maintain optimal gingival health.

  • The treatment only uses water, no chemicals are used.

  • It can get rid of tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas, without any damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Manual scaling commonly uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is hardly noticeable. This makes ultrasonic cleaning suitable to those with delicate teeth.

  • The cleaning procedure is much faster than manual scaling making your visit more comfortable.

After your teeth have actually been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to look for any residual deposits and then polished.
