Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple techniques: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
