Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are numerous methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth considerably. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical whitening process. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays ought to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
