Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are multiple methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth significantly. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous techniques: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical lightening process. The appointment is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment since it is so easy and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
