Today We Will Be Talking About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its original sizes and shape. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be brought back with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a huge filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a huge cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth undergo tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against damage. A broken or cracked tooth is a far more severe matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, in addition to producing a nice smile.

It takes two appointments to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the very first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in making a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, normally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is worn throughout this time. In the 2nd visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown procedure generally needs two appointments. Your first visit will consist of taking impressions that will be used to produce your customized crown. A mold will also be utilized to produce a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for approximately 2 weeks up until your brand-new crown is produced by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and forming the surface area to effectively fit the crown. When these details are achieved, your short-term crown will be positioned with short-term cement and your bite will be inspected to guarantee you are biting properly.

At your second appointment your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental visits to examine your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
