Crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has actually become so advanced that big parts of the tooth needs to be removed, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a broken tooth from worsening, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth should typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a special laboratory, which manufactures a custom-made crown. In many cases, a short-term crown is used till the long-term crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are usually applied just to fairly small areas.

Caring For Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown could last approximately 8 years or longer. It is essential to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Particular behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly reduce the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps harm the crown.

The Topic Of The Day Will Be:

Ultra-Sonic Cleanings

We use ultrasonic scalers for a lot of adult dental cleanings. These devices utilize ultrasonic vibrations to help breakdown the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and gum disease. The ultrasonic cleaners produce tiny bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, killing microbes and eliminating plaque and tartar in the process. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the periodontal pockets to help preserve optimal gingival health.

  • The procedure only uses water, no chemicals are used.

  • It can eliminate tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas, without any damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Manual scaling typically uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is barely perceptible. This makes ultrasonic cleaning ideal to those with vulnerable teeth.

  • The cleaning process is much faster than manual scaling making your visit more comfortable.

After your teeth have actually been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to look for any residual deposits then polished.
