Today's Conversation Is About:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use a number of approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and convenient lightening process. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment since it is so simple and quick!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
