Today We Will Be Talking About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its initial sizes and shape. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if restored by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling wears out. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a huge cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth are subjected to tremendous pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. A broken or split tooth is a much more severe matter and far more tough to treat. Crowns prevent this, in addition to making for a good smile.

It takes 2 visits to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the very first visit any decay is removed from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, normally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A short-term crown is worn throughout this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment typically needs 2 visits. Your first visit will consist of taking impressions that will be used to develop your customized crown. A mold will also be utilized to develop a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for roughly two weeks until your new crown is produced by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface area to correctly fit the crown. Once these details are achieved, your short-term crown will be put with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to guarantee you are biting correctly.

At your second appointment your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to make sure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care directions and encouraged to have routine dental check ups to check your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
