The Conversation For Today Will Be:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the whole tooth surface restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling breaks. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth undergo incredible pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. A busted or cracked tooth is a far more severe matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as making for a nice smile.

It takes 2 appointments to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in making a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, generally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A temporary crown is used throughout this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment generally requires two visits. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be used to develop your custom-made crown. A mold will also be utilized to create a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for roughly two weeks until your brand-new crown is produced by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by getting rid of any decay and shaping the surface to effectively fit the crown. Once these details are achieved, your temporary crown will be placed with short-term cement and your bite will be inspected to ensure you are biting properly.

At your 2nd visit your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have routine dental check ups to inspect your crown. As always, correct oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
