Today's Conversation Is About:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are multiple methods to bleach teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous techniques: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and hassle-free lightening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment because it is so simple and fast!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
