Today's Discussion Is About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if recovered by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a large filling breaks. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Remember that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth go through tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and securing the tooth against breakage. A broken or cracked tooth is a much more serious matter and far more tough to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with making for a good smile.

It takes two visits to recover a tooth with a crown. In the very first visit any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A short-term crown is worn during this time. In the second visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

A crown procedure generally needs two visits. Your very first appointment will include taking impressions that will be used to develop your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to develop a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for roughly two weeks till your new crown is fabricated by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and forming the surface area to correctly fit the crown. Once these details are achieved, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting appropriately.

At your 2nd visit your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to check your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
