Today Were Discussing:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple techniques: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very fast and hassle-free lightening process. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment since it is so easy and quick!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
