- Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and find issues early). Often deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also trigger the nerve to be damaged to the point it requires root canal treatment. Once this happens, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and start to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).
By the time the pulp is infected it needs to be treated, and can not recover by itself. It can even damage the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and might be very agonizing. Signs that the pulp has ended up being infected might consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sugary foods, discomfort, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Often, however, no symptoms are apparent and the individual is unaware of any issue until a checkup.
A root canal is then carried out to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and disinfect the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to remove the tooth. As soon as the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. Usually a core build-up and crown is suggested for bring back a tooth that has actually had root canal treatment.
