Crowns are artificial caps, typically made from a material like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to restore a tooth's function and look following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has actually become so advanced that huge portions of the tooth has to be eliminated, crowns are frequently used to fix the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a split tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth has to be brought back to its natural look.

Treatments

A tooth must normally be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a special lab, which makes a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a short-term crown is used until the long-term crown is ready. Long-term crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are generally applied just to fairly small locations.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown could last approximately 8 years or longer. It is essential to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially reduce the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even damage the crown.

Ultrasonic Cleanings

We use ultrasonic scalers for many adult dental cleanings. These devices utilize ultrasonic vibrations to help breakdown the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. The ultrasonic cleaners develop tiny bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, eliminating microbes and eliminating plaque and tartar at the same time. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the gum pockets to help preserve optimal gingival health.

  • The procedure only uses water, no chemicals are used.

  • It can eliminate tartar buildup in hard-to-reach locations, with no damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Manual scaling often uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is hardly noticeable. This makes ultrasonic cleaning ideal to those with delicate teeth.

  • The cleaning procedure is faster than manual scaling making your visit more comfy.

After your teeth have actually been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to check for any residual deposits and after that polished.
