Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use a number of methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical whitening process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so easy and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
