Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of most clients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous methods: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical bleaching procedure. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
