Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are numerous methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use a number of methods: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and convenient bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment because it is so easy and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
