Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are numerous ways to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. Three various strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and convenient bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so simple and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
