Today's Topic Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many patients, there are multiple ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize a number of approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient bleaching process. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so simple and quick!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
