Crowns are artificial caps, normally made of a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and look following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has ended up being so advanced that huge parts of the tooth has to be removed, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a split tooth from becoming worse, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be brought back to its natural look.

Procedures

A tooth must generally be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique lab, which manufactures a custom-designed crown. In many cases, a short-term crown is applied until the permanent crown is prepared. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are in some cases confused with veneers, however they are quite different. Veneers are usually applied only to relatively little areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown might last approximately 8 years or longer. It is extremely important to floss in the area of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, eating hard foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, or even harm the crown.

Today's Subject Will Be:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are a number of methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use a number of methods: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very quick and practical bleaching procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and fast!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
