Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many clients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and practical whitening procedure. The appointment is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so simple and quick!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
