Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of most clients, there are a number of methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth significantly. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous techniques: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and hassle-free lightening process. The appointment is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment because it is so easy and quick!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
