Crowns are synthetic caps, normally made of a product like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that huge portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are frequently used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a broken tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be brought back to its natural look.

Procedures

A tooth must generally be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique laboratory, which produces a custom-made crown. Sometimes, a short-term crown is applied until the permanent crown is ready. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are in some cases mistaken as veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are usually applied only to fairly little locations.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown could last as much as 8 years or longer. It is extremely important to floss in the area of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, and even harm the crown.

Today Were Discussing:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are multiple methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and convenient bleaching process. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment since it is so easy and quick!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
