Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the whole tooth surface area restoring it to its initial sizes and shape. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if recovered by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a huge filling breaks. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a huge cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth undergo incredible pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. A busted or cracked tooth is a far more severe matter and a lot more difficult to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with making for a good smile.

It takes two visits to recover a tooth with a crown. In the first visit any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A short-term crown is used during this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

A crown procedure generally requires 2 appointments. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be used to create your customized crown. A mold will also be utilized to produce a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by getting rid of any decay and forming the surface to properly fit the crown. As soon as these details are achieved, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting correctly.

At your 2nd visit your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be thoroughly positioned to make sure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have routine dental visits to inspect your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
