Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of most patients, there are multiple methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize a number of techniques: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient lightening process. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
