Crowns are synthetic caps, generally made of a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually become so advanced that large parts of the tooth should be taken out, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to avoid a broken tooth from becoming worse, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural look.

Treatments

A tooth must usually be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a special laboratory, which makes a custom-designed crown. Sometimes, a temporary crown is applied till the long-term crown is ready. Long-term crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are in some cases confused with veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are usually applied just to relatively small areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown could last up to 8 years or longer. It is very important to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly reduce the life of a crown. Furthermore, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps harm the crown.

The Topic Of The Day Will Be:

Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. Due to the fact that gum disease is usually pain-free, you may not know you have it. Also called periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth.

Here are couple warning signs that can indicate an issue:

  • gums that bleed easily.

  • red, inflamed, sore gums.

  • gums that have pulled away from the teeth.

  • consistent bad breath or bad taste.

  • permanent teeth that are separating or loose.

  • any difference in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

  • any change in the fit of partial dentures.

There are many aspects that enhance the risk of establishing gum disease consisting of smoking cigarettes, pregnancy, and diabetes. It is necessary to visit your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better.

The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed quickly. At this phase, the disease is still fixable and can usually be removed by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily flossing and brushing.

Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can lead to the loss of bone and tissue that support the teeth and it might become more extreme with time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. It generally worsens slowly, but there can be periods of fast progression.

Aggressive periodontitis is a highly destructive type of gum disease that occurs in patients who are otherwise healthy. Typical features include rapid loss of bone and tissue and may occur in some areas of the mouth, or in the entire mouth.

Research between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases is ongoing. While a link is not conclusive, some research studies indicate that extreme gum disease may be connected with a number of other health conditions such as stroke or diabetes.

Routine dental examinations and periodontal examinations are essential. The treatment techniques that most dental practitioners diagnose will depend upon the type of disease and how far the condition has progressed. Excellent dental care in your home is important to help keep periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring.
