What Are Same Day Crowns?

Same day crowns are a brand-new innovation that a dental professional can financially bring back damaged teeth in a single consultation using a premium ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) innovation, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling machine in one instrument. The dental practitioner uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the broken tooth. This optical impression is transferred and shown on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to create the restoration. Then CAM takes over and instantly develops the restoration while the client waits. Finally, the dental practitioner bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The entire process takes about one hour.

What Does This Innovation Mean For A Client?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, suitable with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dental practitioners no longer have to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the standard second visit has been removed. This brand-new innovation has over 10 years of medical research and documents to support it. The restorations have been proven accurate, safe and effective.

Today's Topic Will Be About:

Fillings

Fillings are done to eliminate decay, and replace the afflicted tooth structure. It is called a filling since brand-new material fills the hole that the decay left. Now days most teeth are treated with bonded tooth colored composite resin fillings. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If not treated, decay can result in tooth pain and/or infection, and the tooth would need a root canal treatment or extraction.

There are 2 types of fillings; amalgam or silver fillings, and composite or white fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored to blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth. Most dentists offer both types of fillings, but find that a number of their patients prefer the composite fillings.

The term composite refers to the actual filling material which is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium.

Composite fillings offer great durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is eliminated when the dental practitioner prepares the tooth, and this may lead to a smaller sized filling than with of an amalgam.

In addition, composites are "bonded", or adhesively connected, to the tooth, frequently allowing a more conservative repair for the tooth. Composite fillings require that the tooth be kept clean and dry throughout the whole filling procedure and they are subject to stain and staining over time. The life expectancy of a white filling can depend considerably on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite.

Composite filling material is also frequently used to fix front teeth that have actually cracked or worn. Where possible, esthetic bonding of composite material to front teeth is usually much cheaper than veneers or crowns. However, bonding generally does not last as long as veneers or crowns.
