The Discussion For Today Is:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists use numerous techniques: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really quick and hassle-free lightening procedure. The appointment is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment because it is so easy and quick!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
