The Topic For Today Will Be:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the whole tooth surface area restoring it to its initial sizes and shape. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure providing the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a large filling breaks. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a big cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth undergo remarkable pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against breakage. A damaged or cracked tooth is a much more severe matter and far more challenging to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as producing a nice smile.

It takes 2 visits to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, generally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is used during this time. In the 2nd visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown procedure generally needs two appointments. Your very first visit will include taking impressions that will be used to produce your customized crown. A mold will also be used to produce a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for around 2 weeks up until your new crown is produced by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and forming the surface area to correctly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be put with temporary cement and your bite will be inspected to ensure you are biting appropriately.

At your second appointment your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly placed to make sure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have routine dental visits to inspect your crown. As always, correct oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
