Today's Topic Is About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the whole tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if restored by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a huge filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Remember that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth undergo tremendous pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against damage. A busted or split tooth is a far more severe matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as producing a good smile.

It takes two visits to recover a tooth with a crown. In the first visit any decay is removed from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, generally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A temporary crown is worn throughout this time. In the second visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

A crown procedure normally needs two visits. Your first visit will consist of taking impressions that will be used to produce your customized crown. A mold will also be utilized to create a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for roughly two weeks till your brand-new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by getting rid of any decay and forming the surface to effectively fit the crown. When these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be put with temporary cement and your bite will be inspected to guarantee you are biting appropriately.

At your second visit your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to examine your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
