Crowns are artificial caps, usually made of a material like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to fix a tooth's function and look following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has ended up being so advanced that big portions of the tooth has to be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to avoid a cracked tooth from becoming worse, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be brought back to its natural look.

Treatments

A tooth must normally be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a special laboratory, which makes a custom-made crown. Sometimes, a temporary crown is used until the permanent crown is ready. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, however they are quite different. Veneers are normally applied only to relatively small locations.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown might last as much as 8 years or longer. It is crucial to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, eating hard foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps break the crown.

The Discussion For Today Is:

UltraSonic Cleanings

We use ultrasonic scalers for a lot of adult dental cleanings. These devices utilize ultrasonic vibrations to help breakdown the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and gum disease. The ultrasonic cleaners produce microscopic bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, eliminating microbes and removing plaque and tartar in the process. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the gum pockets to help preserve optimal gingival health.

  • The treatment only uses water, no chemicals are used.

  • It can remove tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas, with no damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Manual scaling frequently uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is hardly perceptible. This makes ultrasonic cleaning appropriate to those with delicate teeth.

  • The cleaning procedure is much faster than manual scaling making your visit more comfortable.

After your teeth have been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to check for any residual deposits then polished.
