Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching just works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple methods: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment because it is so simple and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
