Today's Conversation Has To Do With:

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and discover problems early). Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth might also cause the nerve to be harmed to the point it requires root canal therapy. When this happens, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it has to be treated, and can not heal by itself. It can even weaken the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and might be very painful. Signs that the pulp has become infected might include sensitivity to hot/cold or sugary foods, discomfort, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no signs are apparent and the person is unaware of any issue up until a checkup.

A root canal is then performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and disinfect the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. When the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. Generally a core build-up and crown is suggested for bring back a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
