Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are multiple ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize a number of methods: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
