Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many clients, there are multiple methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and hassle-free lightening process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays ought to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
