Today's Discussion Will Be About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be brought back with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatments, or when a large filling wears out. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a big cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth are subjected to tremendous pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against damage. A busted or split tooth is a far more serious matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as producing a good smile.

It takes two appointments to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, typically of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is used during this time. In the 2nd visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown procedure typically requires 2 appointments. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be utilized to create your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to develop a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for roughly 2 weeks up until your brand-new crown is produced by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and forming the surface area to correctly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your short-term crown will be positioned with temporary cement and your bite will be inspected to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second visit your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be carefully positioned to make sure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to examine your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
