Today's Topic Will Be:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and convenient bleaching process. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment because it is so simple and fast!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
