Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize a number of techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and hassle-free lightening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
