Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really quick and convenient bleaching procedure. The appointment is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment because it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
